Governing GenAI for Competency-Based Higher Education
Host Institution: Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya | Publication Partner: Egerton Journal of Science and Technology (Special Issue)
We invite faculty, researchers, university administrators, curriculum developers, quality assurance officers, and student leaders to submit short paper proposals documenting real-world implementations, measured outcomes, and lived experiences with Generative AI (GenAI) in higher education institutions, particularly within Competency-Based Education (CBE) frameworks.
Stage 1: Summit Presentation
Authors submit a 1-page Extended Abstract (completed work or work-in-progress) for review to present during Summit experience-sharing panels.
Stage 2: Journal Publication
Following the Summit, authors submit full 2 to 5 page short papers for double-blind peer review for a Special Issue of the Egerton Journal of Science and Technology.
Submission Themes & Pillars
Submissions must demonstrate the actual impact of Generative AI adoption within one or more of the following four areas:
1. GenAI in Learning
Case studies on student study habits, adaptive self-paced mastery learning, skill acquisition, cognitive retention, critical inquiry, and authentic problem-solving in competency-based frameworks.
2. GenAI in Teaching
Case studies on authentic performance assessment redesign, rubric alignment, evaluating demonstrated skill competencies vs. AI prompt generation, faculty efficiency, course delivery, and human-in-the-loop instruction.
3. GenAI in Research
Case studies on scientific discovery velocity, literature synthesis, grant proposal development, data analytics, research data management, and ethical compliance.
4. GenAI in Administration
Case studies on administrative workflow automation, student support response systems, turnaround times, operational cost savings, data privacy, and institutional decision-making.
Format & Submission Requirements
Stage 1: Extended Abstract Structure (Max 1000 Words)
- 1. Title & Target Pillar: Specify target pillar (Learning, Teaching, Research, Admin).
- 2. Classification: Indicate Completed Work or Work-in-Progress.
- 3. Abstract & Keywords: 100-word summary and 3-5 keywords.
- 4. Institutional Context: Setting, target users, baseline problem.
- 5. Intervention Strategy: Specific GenAI tools, prompts, or platforms deployed.
- 6. Methodology: Evaluation strategy (rubrics, analytics, skill assessments).
- 7. Measured/Anticipated Impact: Concrete quantitative/qualitative empirical outcomes or expected metrics.
- 8. Ethical Considerations: Risks, hallucinations, privacy, equity, assessment integrity.
- 9. Policy Takeaways: Direct takeaways feeding into the Policy Workshop.
Stage 2: Case Study Paper Structure (Max 10 Pages)
- 1. Title & Abstract: Concise summary of implementation, findings, and policy takeaways.
- 2. Institutional Context: Department/unit background and specific problem to solve.
- 3. Intervention Strategy: Details on GenAI platforms, prompts, and workflows introduced.
- 4. Methodology & Data: Performance rubrics, time-to-task measurements, skill analytics.
- 5. Empirical Results: Concrete data on competency performance, efficiency, and velocity.
- 6. Ethical Considerations: Observed hallucinations, privacy issues, and assessment integrity.
- 7. Policy Implications: Actionable recommendations for institutional policy drafting.
Review Process & Publication Pathway
1. Stage 1 Review
Abstracts evaluated for relevance across the four core pillars.
2. Presentation
20 selected authors present at showcase panels (10 min + Q&A). Others present posters.
3. Peer Review
Final manuscripts (2-5 pages) undergo double-blind peer review.
4. Publication
Accepted papers published in Egerton Journal Special Issue.
